Mawlamyine lies at the mouth of the Thanlwin River, also called the Salween, where the Gyaing and Ataran rivers join it before it reaches the Gulf of Martaban. From above, water dominates. Broad channels curve around the city, and the large island of Bilu Kyun sits offshore across the river mouth.
The city stretches north to south along a narrow strip between the riverbank and a long, wooded ridge. Streets run parallel to the water in long lines, crossed by shorter lanes that climb toward the ridge. Pagodas and monasteries are strung along the ridge top, and Kyaikthanlan Pagoda is the best known of them. To the north, a long road and rail bridge crosses the Thanlwin.
Mawlamyine, once known as Moulmein, was the first capital of British Burma after 1826. Kipling's poem Mandalay begins by the old Moulmein pagoda, and George Orwell set his essay Shooting an Elephant here. A Mawlamyine map poster shows the long waterfront, the ridge and the wide rivers together, a layout shaped almost entirely by water.

A long ridge runs parallel to the river behind the city. The streets bend around its base, so the built-up area has a clear spine from north to south.
North of the centre a long road and rail bridge crosses the Thanlwin. It shows as a single straight line across the broad water.

Ko e hā ʻa Mawlamyine
Mawlamyine suits anyone with roots in Mon State, and readers who know it through Kipling or Orwell. It also appeals to those who simply like river cities. The mix of long parallel streets and branching water makes an unusually graceful composition.
You can set the title, a subtitle such as a family name or date, and the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint makes the network of rivers look like an old survey chart.
