Kencong lies in the southwestern part of Jember Regency in East Java, on the low plain that stretches toward the island's southern coast. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets surrounded by a patchwork of irrigated rice fields, where the lines of canals and field boundaries are almost as prominent as the roads themselves.
The built-up area follows its main roads outward, with houses and small lanes lining them in long ribbons before thinning into villages. Irrigation channels cut across the fields in straight and gently curving lines, and the regular division of paddies gives the surrounding land a fine, repeating grid that contrasts with the more irregular streets at the town's heart.
Kencong is a working agricultural town rather than a destination, and its character comes from that everyday landscape of markets, mosques, schools and farmland. A Kencong map poster records the shape of that place precisely, from the central streets to the ribbon settlements and field patterns around them, in clean black and white.
The town's core is a compact knot of streets and small lanes, the densest part of the map and the point from which roads spread outward.
Houses line the roads leaving town in long, narrow strips, a typical Javanese pattern that draws thin lines of development across the open fields.
Canals and field boundaries divide the surrounding plain into a fine, repeating pattern, giving the edges of the poster a quiet, textile-like texture.
