Klang is the royal town of Selangor, located west of Kuala Lumpur, near the coast of the Strait of Malacca. The Klang River winds through the centre and divides the town into northern and southern halves. On the map, the river is the main feature: a broad, curving line with bridges connecting the two sides, including the old Kota Bridge.
The older commercial district lies near the river, with shophouse streets forming small, tight blocks. The Istana Alam Shah, the sultan's palace, and its grounds form a large open area nearby. Further out, newer housing estates spread in regular patterns, and highways connect Klang to Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur and the coast.
To the west, the land flattens toward Port Klang, Malaysia's busiest port, and toward the mangrove coast. Klang is also famous for bak kut teh, a herbal pork rib soup associated with the town. A Klang map poster shows the river and its bridges, the compact old town and the broader suburban grid spreading toward the sea.
The river winds through the centre, dividing north and south Klang and forming the main curve around which the whole town is arranged.
The Istana Alam Shah and its grounds create a large open area near the old town, reflecting Klang's role as Selangor's royal seat.
To the west, roads and development extend across flat land toward Port Klang and the mangrove-lined coast of the Strait of Malacca.
