Knjaževac is a town in eastern Serbia near the border with Bulgaria, in the hilly country below Stara Planina. Its defining geographic feature is water. The Trgoviški Timok and the Beli Timok meet here and form the Beli Timok proper, and the town's streets spread out along the valley floor on either side of the confluence.
On a map the rivers split the town into distinct parts, joined by bridges, and the streets follow the curve of the valley instead of a grid. The older centre lies near the water. Newer housing climbs gently toward the hills, and beyond it the fields, orchards and vineyards of the Timok area fade into open country.
