Korsholm, called Mustasaari in Finnish, is a mostly Swedish-speaking municipality in Ostrobothnia that forms a broad ring around the city of Vaasa. On a map it looks less like a town than a coastline coming apart. Its administrative centre, Smedsby, sits just east of Vaasa, and beyond it farmland, forest roads and village clusters run out toward a heavily indented shore.
Part of the Kvarken Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies within Korsholm. The land here is still rising after the last ice age, so new islands appear and bays slowly close up. The ruins of Old Vaasa, the town's original site before the fire of 1852, are also in the municipality, along with the old Korsholm estate.
A Korsholm map poster is mostly water and edges: long fingers of land, scattered islets and the narrow roads that link them. Printed in black and white, the archipelago reads almost like a pattern of ink drops. It is a good choice for anyone who knows the boat routes and summer cottages of this coast.
Hundreds of low islands and skerries scatter across the Gulf of Bothnia, part of a World Heritage landscape shaped by ongoing post-glacial land uplift.
The municipality almost completely surrounds Vaasa, so the city appears as a denser core inside Korsholm's looser web of villages and rural roads.
The original town site, abandoned after the 1852 fire, remains in Korsholm as church ruins and old street lines inland from today's Vaasa.

Ko e hā ʻa Korsholm
People hang Korsholm for the archipelago: the summer house on an island, the drive out to the Replot bridge, or family roots in the Swedish-speaking coastal villages. The broken coastline makes a striking graphic even for people who have never been there.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps the name of an island or the year a cottage was built, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The Blueprint style suits all this water especially well.
