Kristianstad was founded in 1614 by King Christian IV of Denmark as a fortified town. At that time, Skåne was still Danish. It was built to a Renaissance plan, with a regular grid of straight streets, and that grid still defines the centre. On the map it looks unusually disciplined for a town of its size.
The town lies beside the Helge River in a wide, low landscape of wetlands and lakes. Part of this area is protected as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, known as Vattenriket, the Water Kingdom. Kristianstad also contains the lowest point in Sweden, more than two metres below sea level.
A Kristianstad map poster shows the tight grid set among water and green space. Former fortification lines survive as parks and edges around the centre. The river, wetlands and lakes give the outskirts irregular shapes, which contrast neatly with the ordered core built four centuries ago.
The centre's straight streets and regular blocks follow the 1614 plan. They form one of the clearest planned layouts in Scandinavia.
The river and surrounding wetlands wrap around the town. They create broad, irregular areas of water and marsh at the edge of the map.
The lines of the old defences remain visible as parks and boundaries. They mark where the planned town once ended.
