Kurovskoye lies in the east of Moscow Oblast, in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo district, on low, flat ground where forest, bog and peatland stretch towards the Meshchera lowlands. The town grew as a textile centre, and its plan shows that history: a railway line and the old mill area, with residential streets laid out beside them.
The area around Kurovskoye has long been associated with the Old Believers, and the town's older churches and cemeteries reflect this heritage. On a map, the regular blocks of houses and apartment buildings contrast with the dark, unbroken mass of forest that surrounds the settlement on most sides.
