Ko e mape
Kyzyl is the capital of the Republic of Tyva, in a broad basin ringed by mountains in southern Siberia. The city stands at the confluence of the Biy-Khem and the Ka-Khem, and the Yenisei begins where the two rivers join. On a map that meeting of waters is the defining feature, a clear fork of channels, islands and gravel bars along the northern side of town.
Away from the rivers, Kyzyl is laid out in a regular grid of long blocks typical of planned Soviet-era towns. The streets run parallel and perpendicular to the embankment. Beyond the last blocks the pattern thins quickly into open steppe and hills, so the city has a clean, compact outline.
On the embankment near the confluence stands a monument marking the Centre of Asia, a claim based on older geographic calculations. A Kyzyl map poster captures that idea in its composition, with a small ordered city at the heart of a continent and rivers leaving it for the Arctic.
The Biy-Khem and Ka-Khem meet at the city's edge and form the Upper Yenisei, surrounded by braided channels and wooded islands.
A monument on the riverfront marks the traditional geographic centre of the continent, and it gives this stretch of embankment its reputation.
Straight streets and long rectangular blocks form an orderly pattern set against the irregular river shapes to the north.

Ko e hā ʻa Kyzyl
Kyzyl is remote and memorable. For people from Tyva, or travellers who reached it overland, the map is a reminder of a city where the Yenisei begins and mountains fill every horizon.
