La Marsa lies on the coast northeast of Tunis, facing the Gulf of Tunis at the end of a line of seaside suburbs. On the map, a long sandy beach curves along its eastern edge, and behind it the streets form a mix of older town lanes, garden villas and newer residential blocks, spread over gently rising ground.
The town was once a summer retreat for the beys of Tunis and for the capital's wealthy families, and several palaces and grand houses remain. Today it is the northern terminus of the TGM light railway, which links the suburbs of Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, just to the south, with central Tunis.
A La Marsa map poster sets the curved beach against the network of streets and gardens. The coastline gives a strong outer line, and the TGM route leading south ties the town into the wider chain of historic suburbs along the gulf.
A long, gently curving sandy shore marks the town's seaward edge, the main open line on the map.
The light railway from Tunis ends here, its route running south past Sidi Bou Said and Carthage.
Large plots with gardens and former summer residences give parts of the town a spacious, low-density pattern.
