La Romana lies on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, where the Río Dulce meets the Caribbean. On a map, the city sits on the river mouth, with a harbour and cruise terminal on the water. The regular streets of the centre spread inland from the coast.
For more than a century the city has been shaped by sugar. The large Central Romana sugar mill and its surrounding cane fields cover much of the land around the city. To the east lies Casa de Campo, a large resort with golf courses and a marina. Beyond it is Altos de Chavón, a re-created Mediterranean-style village above the Chavón river.
