Las Piedras lies in the department of Canelones, just north of Montevideo, and forms part of the capital's wider metropolitan area. On a map it reads as a compact, continuous grid of blocks. Its streets are laid out in the rectangular pattern common across Uruguay, broken by a railway line and several main roads that link it to the capital and to the towns further north.
The city holds an important place in Uruguayan history. In 1811 the Battle of Las Piedras, led by José Gervasio Artigas, was one of the first major victories of the independence struggle in the Río de la Plata. The site is remembered locally, and the date still carries weight in the country's national story.
A Las Piedras map poster shows a place where the dense suburban grid of greater Montevideo begins to meet open countryside. In black and white the regular blocks create an even texture. The rail line and arterial roads draw longer diagonals across it, which gives the composition a clear direction toward the capital.
Regular rectangular blocks cover most of the city, forming a steady, even pattern that fills the frame with fine parallel lines.
A railway and the main roads to Montevideo cut across the grid at angles, adding strong lines that break up the repeating blocks.
The city is known for the Battle of Las Piedras, an early victory for Artigas, which gives the place a lasting place in national memory.
