Leskovac is in southern Serbia, in the wide, fertile Leskovac basin close to where the Veternica River joins the South Morava. From above the town spreads over the level valley floor. The Veternica runs through the centre, and streets fan out on both banks toward farmland and the ring of hills around the basin.
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Leskovac was a major textile centre, which earned it the nickname of Serbian Manchester. Many old mills and workers' neighbourhoods still shape parts of the town. Rail lines and the main north to south motorway pass nearby and add long, straight lines to the map.
