Leyland lies in Lancashire, just south of Preston, and its name travelled around the world on the side of buses and lorries. From above the town is a broad spread of residential streets, cul-de-sacs and crescents, framed by major roads and cut through by the West Coast railway line, with the motorway network running close by to the east.
Vehicle manufacturing defined Leyland for more than a century, and the story is still kept in the town through truck production and the British Commercial Vehicle Museum. On the map, the large industrial footprints tell part of that history, standing apart from the finer grain of terraced streets near the old centre and the looser post-war estates around it.

The railway line
The main north–south railway runs straight through the town, a firm diagonal that divides the street pattern and anchors the whole composition.
Crescents and closes
Post-war estates surround the older centre with looping crescents and dead-end closes, adding a softer, more organic texture to the map.
