Lice is a district town in Diyarbakır Province in south-eastern Turkey, set where the Upper Mesopotamian plain meets the foothills of the South-eastern Taurus. The town rises from the lower ground onto the first slopes, so its streets bend and step up the hillside instead of laying out a flat grid.
The town is remembered in Turkey for the severe earthquake of 1975, after which much of it was rebuilt. On a map this shows as a mix of older, irregular lanes and newer, more regular blocks, with roads leading south towards the plain and north into the mountains.
A Lice map poster makes the most of that transition. At the bottom of the frame the lines are straighter and more open; towards the top they tighten and curve as the ground climbs. The result feels like a cross-section of the landscape drawn in streets.
Streets on the upper part of town wind along the slope, following contours and giving the map a layered, terraced character.
Areas reconstructed after the 1975 earthquake appear as more regular blocks, a visible change in pattern next to older lanes.
The main road runs south towards Diyarbakır and the open plain, a long line leading the eye out of the hills.
