Lobatse lies in south-eastern Botswana, south of Gaborone and close to the border with South Africa. The town sits in a valley enclosed by rocky, bush-covered hills. Because of this, it is long and fairly narrow, stretched along the railway and main road that run through the valley floor.
It is one of Botswana's older towns and has a number of national institutions. It is home to the High Court and to the country's main abattoir, which is operated by the Botswana Meat Commission and has long been central to the beef export trade.
A Lobatse map poster shows a town shaped by its hills. The streets fill the valley in a lengthwise band, the railway and road run straight through the middle, and the slopes on both sides stay largely open. The result has a clear, elongated composition.
Rocky ridges rise on both sides of the town and limit where it can grow. On the map they leave broad pale areas around the streets.
The line and highway run through the valley in parallel. They form Lobatse's backbone and connect it north to Gaborone.
Residential areas stretch along the valley rather than spreading outward. The town's long, narrow outline is easy to recognise.

Ko e hā ʻa Lobatse
Lobatse is home to families who have lived in the valley for generations and a familiar stop for those travelling between Gaborone and the border. A map of its hills and streets is a simple, personal piece of Botswana.
You can add your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose from five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Get the $9 digital files, or order a printed matte poster with an optional wooden frame.
