Canal system
About five and a half miles of power canals loop through the city. They draw thin, precise lines between the mill buildings and give downtown Lowell one of the most distinctive maps in New England.

Lowell sits where the Concord River meets the Merrimack, just below Pawtucket Falls, and water defines its map. In the early nineteenth century, investors dug a system of power canals to drive textile mills. Those channels still run through downtown, dividing the centre into islands of brick mill complexes, streets and small parks.
Lowell was one of the first planned industrial cities in the United States, and Lowell National Historical Park preserves its mill history. The city is also the birthplace of the writer Jack Kerouac, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell sits along the Merrimack. Beyond downtown, neighbourhoods spread over rolling ground in a looser, older New England pattern.
A Lowell map poster shows the broad sweep of the Merrimack, the smaller Concord coming in from the south and the canals branching between them, a pattern that is especially clear in fine black lines. Bridges, rail lines and irregular streets complete the picture of a city built around harnessing a river.

Upstream of downtown, the Merrimack drops over Pawtucket Falls. The falls supplied the water that once filled the canals and powered the city's industry.
The Concord River joins the Merrimack east of the mill district. It crosses the city from the south in a narrower, winding channel.

Lowell matters to many people: families who worked in the mills, generations of immigrants who settled here, students at UMass Lowell and readers of Kerouac. A map of the city's rivers and canals is both a history lesson and a portrait of home.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a neighbourhood, a graduation or a family's arrival. Blueprint suits the industrial canals especially well. The $9 HD files come in six print sizes, and a free watermarked preview lets you check the layout first.
