Lüfeng lies in the western part of Chongqing municipality, where the landscape becomes the gentle, rolling hills of the Sichuan Basin. The town forms a compact core of streets. Roads lead out from it toward the surrounding villages. Beyond the built edge the map breaks up into small field shapes, winding lanes and patches of water typical of this long-farmed countryside.
Like many towns in the basin, Lüfeng has grown in stages. There is an older, tighter centre and newer blocks added along the main roads. The layout is practical, not ceremonial.
