Lynchburg rises from the south bank of the James River in central Virginia, with the Blue Ridge Mountains on the western horizon. The town began at a ferry crossing run by John Lynch in the eighteenth century and grew as a tobacco market. Its downtown still sits on steep slopes directly above the water.
On a map the old grid near the river runs straight up the hillside, and the streets further out loosen and curve over ridges and around creek valleys.
