Manakara sits on Madagascar's southeastern coast, on a narrow strip of land between the Indian Ocean and a lagoon that forms part of the Pangalanes Canal. From above, the town's streets are squeezed between two bodies of water, and the coastline runs as a long straight edge on one side.
The Pangalanes is a chain of lagoons and cut channels that runs parallel to much of Madagascar's east coast. At Manakara it meets the mouth of a river, and the map shows a complex pattern of water, sandbars and low land.
