Mansehra lies in the Hazara region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at the point where the lower hills begin to rise toward the high mountains of the north. The Karakoram Highway passes directly through town, and the map shows a dense centre built along this route, with neighbourhoods climbing the surrounding slopes wherever the ground allows.
Just outside the town, large boulders carry a set of rock edicts of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, carved in the third century BCE and among the oldest written records in the region. Large inscribed boulders on a hillside near the town preserve edicts of Emperor Ashoka, written in the Kharosthi script more than two thousand years ago.
