Mapun is an island in the southwestern Philippines, set in the Sulu Sea far from the larger islands and closer to northern Borneo than to Mindanao. On a map, the island is the whole subject: an irregular coastline, a fringe of shallow reef and sandbars, and settlements spread mainly along the shore.
Life on Mapun has long depended on the sea, and the pattern of villages reflects it: houses and paths near beaches and landing points, with the island interior largely given to palms, gardens and open land. Smaller islets lie nearby in the surrounding waters.
