Mastic is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven on the South Shore of Long Island, close to the eastern end of Great South Bay. The land is flat and low, and the streets follow a simple, regular plan. Long residential roads run in parallel lines, with the waterways and marshes of the shore close by to the south.
The area's history goes back well before the suburban streets. The Floyd family held land here for generations, and William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, came from this part of Long Island. The William Floyd Parkway, one of the main roads through the area, is named after him.
A Mastic map poster has an appealing rhythm. Parallel streets run in close rows, the main parkway gives it a clear spine, and creeks and shoreline begin to break up the pattern toward the water. It is a very readable map of a very Long Island place.
Long, straight residential streets run side by side in regular rows. On the poster they create a strong, almost striped texture.
The main north–south road is named after the Declaration signer from this area. It forms a clear spine through the hamlet on the map.
To the south, the streets meet marsh, creeks and the waters of the South Shore bays. This gives the map an uneven, watery edge.
