Matala sits on the upper Cunene River in Angola's Huíla province, and on a map the river is the first thing you notice. It pools behind a dam beside the town, then carries on as a narrower channel through open savanna. The built-up area stays close to the water. Its loose pattern of streets thins out quickly into fields, tracks and scattered homesteads.
The Matala Dam was built in the colonial period to generate power and supply irrigation, and it is central to what the town is. Canals and farmed plots spread out from the river. In black and white, these straight farm lines stand out against the looser curves of the Cunene and the unpaved roads that lead away across the plateau.
The Moçâmedes railway runs inland from the Atlantic coast and passes through Matala, adding one more long, straight line to the map. A Matala map poster shows all of these together: the water, the dam, the rails and the modest street grid of a town that grew where the river could be put to work.
The river widens into a reservoir above the town and then narrows again as it heads south. It is the strongest natural line on the map and runs through the whole composition.
The dam's short, straight wall cuts across the river next to the town. It marks where the open water of the reservoir ends and the regular river channel begins again.
The Moçâmedes line crosses the area in long, straight sections. It links Matala with the coast and with the interior, and it contrasts with the curving river and the looser town streets.

Ko e hā ʻa Matala
For people who grew up in Matala or worked on its farms and waterworks, this map shows a very particular landscape: a river, a concrete dam and the roads in between. It makes a quiet, personal piece for a hallway or study, quite different from the usual big-city posters.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example to add a family name or a date that matters. Choose one of five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Then download the $9 HD files or order a printed poster on matte paper.
