Matam is the capital of the Matam Region in northeastern Senegal. It lies on the Senegal River, which forms the border with Mauritania. On a map, the river dominates: a broad, winding channel with a wide floodplain on either side. The town sits on the southern bank, with its streets laid out along the water and stretching back inland.
This part of the valley belongs to the Fouta Toro, a historic region along the middle Senegal River. The river's seasonal floods shape everything here. Channels, backwaters and low-lying fields spread across the map, and settlement keeps to slightly higher ground.
