Mateur lies in the Bizerte governorate of northern Tunisia, on a broad agricultural plain southwest of Lake Ichkeul. From above, the town has a compact centre of close-set streets, and newer quarters extend along the main roads. Around it spreads a patchwork of fields, with hills rising in the distance and the wide water of the lake to the north.
The town has long been an agricultural and market centre for the surrounding plain, and it sits on road and rail routes linking Bizerte with the interior. Nearby Ichkeul National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known as one of the most important wintering grounds for migratory birds in the Mediterranean.
