Matipó lies in the Zona da Mata of eastern Minas Gerais, a region of rounded hills, narrow valleys and farmland long associated with coffee growing. On the map the town follows the valley floor, where the land is flat enough to build, while the slopes around it stay largely open.
That terrain shapes the plan. Main streets run along the valley, and side streets climb short distances before the ground gets too steep. A Matipó map poster reflects this: an elongated town with a stream running through or beside it and rural roads winding into the hills.
The contrast between the tidy lines of the centre and the loose, curving country roads is what gives the design its character. It is a modest map, but it describes the landscape of interior Minas faithfully.
The town's main streets run along the bottom of the valley, forming a long, narrow built-up area that sets the direction of the poster.
A watercourse follows the valley past the centre, adding a gently curving line that the streets align with.
Rural roads twist up into the surrounding hills and farmland, their curves contrasting with the more regular blocks in town.
