Maubin lies in the Ayeyarwady Delta, the vast, flat lowland where Myanmar's great river divides into many channels before reaching the sea. The town sits on one of these distributaries, and on a map water is never far away. Streets follow the riverbank, and the built-up area stretches along the channel rather than spreading evenly outward.
It is the administrative centre of Maubin District, west of Yangon, in a region long devoted to rice growing. Beyond the town, the land is laced with smaller waterways, embankments and fields, all nearly level.
