Medemblik lies on the western shore of the IJsselmeer in North Holland and is one of the oldest towns in West Friesland. The historic centre sits right at the water's edge, arranged around its harbours, while the wider municipality spreads over flat polder land with villages, dikes and long straight drainage canals.
A Medemblik map poster shows the town's close ties to the water. Harbour basins cut into the old centre, a long dike follows the shoreline, and the streets of the town run parallel to the quays. Beyond them the polders are divided by ruler-straight roads and ditches, the geometry of land reclaimed and managed over centuries.

Medemblik is also the end point of the historic steam tram line from Hoorn, and its waters host sailing events.
