Melzo lies in the Martesana area east of Milan, on the level farmland of the Po plain. The town grew around a small historic centre with a church and square, then spread outward in rings of housing and industry. From above it forms a fairly compact shape, tied to Milan by the railway and by main roads running east and west.
The railway is the clearest structural line on the map, cutting across the town and carrying suburban trains to Milan. Warehouses and logistics sites lie around it, including a rail freight terminal. Beyond the last streets, farmland with straight field boundaries and irrigation ditches stretches in every direction toward the neighbouring towns.
