Menzel Bourguiba sits on the southern shore of Lake Bizerte in northern Tunisia, and its map is unusually orderly. The town was built largely in the early twentieth century, and its centre follows a clear grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks. Along the waterfront, the lake forms a broad, open edge, and to one side the large industrial footprint of the naval shipyard stretches along the shore.
Under French rule the town was called Ferryville, founded to house workers at the Sidi Abdallah naval arsenal, which made the lagoon one of the key naval bases in the Mediterranean. After independence it was renamed in honour of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president, and the shipyard continues to shape the town's economy and the outline of its coast.
A Menzel Bourguiba map poster shows a planned town in its setting: a neat grid meeting the soft curve of a lagoon, with the heavy shapes of docks and workshops on one side and farmland spreading inland. The combination of geometry and water gives the composition a calm, well-balanced structure.
The central streets run in straight lines and meet at right angles, a legacy of the town's planning as Ferryville and a striking contrast to older Tunisian medinas.
The wide lagoon borders the town, turning the whole northern side of the map into open water with a smooth, gently curving shoreline.
Docks, basins and large industrial blocks occupy a long stretch of shore, the shapes of the naval shipyard around which the town was originally built.
