Mequon lies in southern Ozaukee County, north of Milwaukee, with Lake Michigan along its eastern edge. The city covers a large area for its population, and the map reflects that. It is laid out on a wide grid of roads a mile apart, with large lots, woodland and open land between them, so the whole place feels spacious.
The Milwaukee River winds through the western part of the city in loose curves. It contrasts with the straight section-line roads. On the eastern side, the land ends at the bluffs above the lake, where Concordia University Wisconsin has its campus looking out over the water.
