Merauke lies in the far southeast of Indonesian New Guinea, near the border with Papua New Guinea, and is the capital of South Papua. The phrase 'from Sabang to Merauke' describes the full span of Indonesia, and this city marks its eastern end. The land is extremely flat: coastal plains, swamps and savanna stretching in every direction.
The town lies along the Maro River near its mouth on the Arafura Sea. Its streets form a fairly regular grid, with wide roads and generous plots typical of a town built on open, level ground. The riverfront and port are on one side, and on the others the streets thin into fields and wetland.
A Merauke map poster puts all of this into one image: the curving river, the orderly town and the open plain around it. To the east lies Wasur National Park, a protected landscape of wetlands and grassland that makes the city's edges feel especially open.
The wide, meandering river runs past the town toward the Arafura Sea, forming the dominant natural line on the map.
Merauke's centre is laid out in a clear grid of wide roads, easy to read against the flat terrain.
Swamp, savanna and farmland surround the town, with the wetlands of Wasur National Park lying further east.
