Meridian lies in Idaho's Treasure Valley, just west of Boise, and from above it is one of the clearest examples of the American land survey. Arterial roads run exactly north-south and east-west at one-mile intervals, forming a large grid of square sections. Inside each square, subdivisions fill the space with curving streets, loops and cul-de-sacs.
The city takes its name from the Boise Meridian, the survey line used as the reference point for land surveys across Idaho. Meridian was once a small farming town, and it has grown rapidly into one of the state's largest cities. Interstate 84 runs across its southern side, and irrigation canals still wind across the grid.
A Meridian map poster shows that contrast clearly. The rigid square-mile roads, the soft, looping residential streets and the diagonal lines of canals and the interstate combine into a pattern that is orderly yet surprisingly detailed, a map of a fast-growing western city.

Canals from the valley's farming past cut across the grid at angles. Their winding lines break the regularity of the streets.
The interstate runs along the city's southern side, a strong line linking Meridian with Boise and the rest of the Treasure Valley.
