Mocímboa da Praia lies on the coast of Cabo Delgado province, in the far north of Mozambique, where a wide bay opens onto the Indian Ocean. From above, the town sits on the shore, its streets running down toward the water and a small port. Across the bay, tidal flats and channels spread out and change shape with every tide.
Near the waterfront the street plan is more regular. Further inland it loosens into neighbourhoods of smaller houses and footpaths. Beyond them, bush and farmland stretch away, crossed by the main road along the coast. The town has long been a local trading and fishing port on this stretch of coast, with historic links to Swahili and wider Indian Ocean trade. Since 2017 it has been at the centre of the conflict in Cabo Delgado. Insurgents held it for about a year from 2020 until government and allied forces regained control. For many displaced residents, the map is a reminder of home.

Streets lead down to the shore and a small harbour, the point where the town meets the sea and where fishing boats and coastal traffic gather.
