Mongo is the capital of the Guéra province in central Chad. The province is named after the Guéra massif, a group of granite hills and rocky outcrops that rise abruptly from the surrounding plain. On the map, these hills set the scene: the town sits on flatter ground among them, and its roads bend to pass between the rocks.
The town itself has a simple structure. A central area of markets and administrative buildings is surrounded by residential quarters of compounds on loosely arranged blocks. Main roads lead out across the plain to other towns in the region. Seasonal streams, dry for much of the year, cross the land as faint, branching lines.
