Mongu is the capital of Zambia's Western Province and sits on a low sandy ridge at the eastern edge of the Barotse floodplain. From above, the contrast is striking: on one side the town's roads and plots, on the other an immense flat plain that the upper Zambezi floods for several months each year, turning grassland into shallow open water.
A long canal cuts from the foot of the town out toward the river channels, giving Mongu its harbour and a link to boat traffic across the plain. The town itself is modest in scale, with a central grid around the market and administrative buildings, and looser residential areas spreading along the ridge to the north and south.
Mongu is closely tied to the Lozi people and the Kuomboka, the ceremony in which the Litunga travels by royal barge from Lealui on the plain to Limulunga on higher ground as the floods rise. Limulunga lies just north of the town. A Mongu map poster frames the settlement at exactly that meeting point of dry land and seasonal water.
The western half of the map opens onto the Barotse floodplain, a nearly empty expanse crossed by channels and tracks, giving the composition a strong horizon between built ridge and open plain.
A straight canal runs from the edge of town into the plain, a single deliberate line that connects Mongu to the waterways used by boats during the flood season.
The road west to Kalabo crosses the floodplain on a long embankment with many bridges, a thin ruled line reaching across otherwise open ground.

Ko e hā ʻa Mongu
Mongu appeals to people with roots in Barotseland, to those who have witnessed the Kuomboka, and to anyone who has spent time in Western Province for work. The meeting of town and floodplain makes an unusually graphic poster, calm and spacious.
Add a title in your own words, a subtitle such as the year of a ceremony you attended, and keep or edit the coordinates. Blueprint suits the waterways well, though Classic black and white, Noir, Paper and Sand are all available for the same map.
