Montbéliard sits in the far east of France, close to the Swiss border, where the Allan and Lizaine rivers meet. For centuries it belonged to the dukes of Württemberg rather than to France, and it became a Lutheran town, a heritage still visible in its Protestant churches. The château of the dukes rises on a rocky spur above the old centre.
