Mormugao lies at the western tip of a peninsula in south Goa, between the Zuari estuary and the Arabian Sea. From above, the headland dominates: a narrow finger of land with the harbour and quays on its sheltered side, rocky shores facing the sea and the town of Vasco da Gama spreading inland. Dabolim Airport lies close by, its runway cutting across the higher ground.
Mormugao Port is one of India's oldest major ports and is historically known for exporting iron ore mined in Goa's interior. The harbour's natural shelter made it important during the Portuguese period and it remains central to Goa's economy today. Fragments of the old fortifications survive on the headland.
