Mühldorf am Inn is a town in Upper Bavaria, set on the Inn river east of Munich. The river runs along the southern side of the historic centre, and from above its wide, smooth line gives the town a natural edge. Bridges cross towards the far bank, and roads and railway lines fan out from the town to the surrounding countryside.
For centuries Mühldorf belonged to the Archbishopric of Salzburg, an enclave surrounded by Bavarian territory, until it became part of Bavaria in the early nineteenth century. Its old town is centred on the Stadtplatz, a long elongated square lined with arcaded houses and closed at each end by a town gate, a layout typical of Inn-Salzach towns.
