Mūndwa is a town in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, a short distance south of Nagaur on the eastern side of the Thar Desert. The land is flat and dry, with sandy soils and a long hot season. From above, the town is a dense, compact knot of houses and lanes, with a few roads running out across the open plain.
Settlements in this part of Rajasthan have traditionally been built close together, with narrow lanes and thick-walled houses that keep out the heat. Around the town, large rectangles of millet, pulses and other rain-fed crops spread across the plain, along with tanks and wells that store scarce water. Nagaur district is also known for its livestock and for one of India's largest cattle fairs.
