Mungeli is the headquarters of the district of the same name in Chhattisgarh, created in 2012 when it was carved out of Bilaspur district. The town lies on the broad plains of central Chhattisgarh, a region of rice farming, and from above it appears as a dense centre of lanes and markets surrounded by a wide, flat landscape of fields and villages.
As in many towns of the region, ponds and water tanks are an important part of the map, scattered among the neighbourhoods and fields as small, smooth shapes. Roads lead out toward Bilaspur and other towns of the plain, and the built-up area follows them outward in narrow strips. Beyond the town, the land is divided into countless small fields.
