Mungyeong is a mountain city in the northwest of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Its settlements are spread across narrow valleys, not gathered in one centre. From above, steep ridges take up most of the area, and roads, railway lines and streams follow the valley floors between them. The main urban area, Jeomchon, forms the densest cluster of streets.
The city is best known for Mungyeong Saejae, the historic pass that once carried the main road between Seoul and the southeast. Its old gates and forest trail are now a popular walking route. The area also had a coal-mining past, and the valleys still show traces of the rail lines and small towns that served the mines.
A Mungyeong map poster reads as a landscape as much as a city. Street grids appear in small pockets, while the surrounding contours and winding roads give the print its movement. It is a good choice for anyone who likes maps where the terrain decides the shape.
The old pass road climbs north through the mountains. It was the historic main route between the capital and the Gyeongsang region, and it is now a preserved walking trail.
The main urban district forms the city's densest street pattern. It is a compact grid set on flatter ground between the surrounding ridges.
Streams, roads and railway lines follow the valley floors. Together they form thin, branching lines that trace the shape of the mountains.
