Muş lies in eastern Turkey, on the southern edge of a wide, flat plain surrounded by mountains. The city climbs the lower slopes of the hills behind it, so from above its streets rise in curving layers, facing north across a landscape that is almost perfectly level in contrast.
The older neighbourhoods are the steepest and most irregular, with narrow streets following the contours. Lower down, newer districts spread onto flatter ground in a more regular pattern, and main roads lead out onto the plain. Beyond the city edge, the Murat river and its tributaries cross the valley floor, surrounded by fields.
