Fortified church
St. Arbogast and its surrounding wall form a compact ring at the heart of the old village. It is a rare surviving example of a fortified church in Switzerland.

Muttenz lies just southeast of Basel, in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Its map has several distinct layers. The Rhine forms the northern boundary, lined by harbour basins and industrial land. A broad band of railway tracks cuts through the middle, where the large marshalling yard spreads out. To the south, the land rises to the wooded Wartenberg.
At the centre of the old village stands the church of St. Arbogast, one of the few fortified churches in Switzerland still enclosed by a complete ring wall. On a map, that small walled precinct is a clear focal point, with the older lanes around it and newer residential streets spreading outward. The hill above carries the ruins of three medieval castles.

Rail yard
The marshalling yard spreads across the middle of the town as a long bundle of parallel tracks, which gives the map a strong horizontal rhythm.
Wartenberg hill
South of the village, the wooded Wartenberg rises with three castle ruins on its ridge. It balances the flat Rhine plain to the north.
