Mutukula lies on the border between Tanzania and Uganda, in the Kagera region, just south of the equator. The town grew up around the crossing point, and the main road dominates its map. Shops, lodgings and houses line the highway on both sides, and a looser grid of side streets spreads out from this central spine.
The international border runs through the settlement, and there is a matching town on the Ugandan side, so the map shows one urban area divided by a line on paper. Beyond the town, the land is open and gently rolling, part of the grassland and farmland that lies west of Lake Victoria.
