Nagato lies on the Sea of Japan coast in the north-west of Yamaguchi Prefecture. The coast is indented, with deep bays, rocky headlands and islands. Senzaki, the old fishing port, faces Ōmijima across a narrow channel crossed by a bridge, and the island's sea cliffs are among the most dramatic on this coast.
On a map the town appears in sections that follow the shoreline. Streets line the harbour and bays, and valleys lead inland to hot-spring areas such as Yumoto Onsen. Wooded hills fill the rest of the land. At Motonosumi, a line of red torii gates runs down to the sea, a well-known sight.
Nagato is the hometown of the poet Kaneko Misuzu, and in 2016 it hosted a summit between the Japanese and Russian leaders. A Nagato map poster brings together a place where land and sea are closely interlocked.
The fishing port and the island opposite face each other across a narrow channel, linked by a bridge that crosses the gap.
Bays, inlets and headlands give the map a deeply cut shoreline, with dense detail where the town meets the water.
Roads and rail lines follow narrow valleys inland toward the hot-spring areas, cutting fine lines through the wooded hills.

Nagato draws people back for its coast, its hot springs and its poet. A map captures the sea's close relationship with the town in a clean, restrained form suited to a Japanese interior or anywhere else.
