Nanlong is the seat of Nanbu County, in the northeast of Sichuan province. The town lies on the Jialing River, which winds south through hilly country toward Chongqing. On the map the river is the main feature. Its bends shape the edges of the built-up area, and the town's streets spread across the flatter ground along the banks.
The hills around Nanlong are covered with terraces and small fields, and roads climb between them in tight curves. Bridges link the two banks, and newer districts with wide straight roads and larger blocks have grown up next to the older centre.
