Natchitoches, in northwest Louisiana, was founded in 1714 and is known as the oldest permanent settlement in the territory of the Louisiana Purchase. Its map is shaped by Cane River Lake, a long, curving former channel of the Red River that runs through the heart of town.
The historic district lies along the west bank, where Front Street, paved with brick, faces the water. The film Steel Magnolias was shot here, and each winter the Christmas Festival of Lights illuminates the riverbank. Northwestern State University occupies a large campus on the southern side of town, with its own distinctive layout.
A Natchitoches map poster follows the lake's curve through the centre, with the old streets on one bank and the town spreading beyond. The water draws a soft, flowing line through the frame, giving the design a natural focus.

The brick-paved main street of the historic district runs along the riverbank, facing the water and the landing.
Northwestern State University forms a large area of looping paths and buildings in the south of the town.
