Negēlē, also known as Negele Borana, lies in the south of Ethiopia's Oromia region. It is an important town on the routes linking the highlands with the lowland south. From above, the town is organised by its roads. The main routes cross near the centre, and the streets around them form a loose grid.
Around the town, the country opens into grassland, scrub and farmland, with the settlement fading gradually into it rather than stopping at a clear edge. A Negēlē map poster shows this quiet structure well. A denser core sits at the crossroads, with lower-density neighbourhoods around it and long roads running away across the landscape.
Without a coastline or large river, the map depends on proportion and spacing. In black and white, the few strong lines of the main roads stand out against the finer, less regular pattern of local streets and tracks. The result is a spare, balanced composition, suited to a place whose importance comes from its position rather than its size.
Regional roads meet near the centre of town, forming the strongest lines on the map and the point from which the settlement spreads.
Local streets form an open, partly regular grid around the centre, with generous spacing between blocks and plots.
Beyond the built-up area, the land is largely open, so the town appears as a clear, compact shape set in empty space.
