Nepānagar lies in Burhanpur district in the far south of Madhya Pradesh, among the forested foothills of the Satpura Range. The town takes its name from NEPA, the newsprint mill set up here in the mid-twentieth century, the first of its kind in India. Its layout still reflects the mill's place at the heart of the town.
On the map, the mill complex is a large, clearly defined block, with the staff colony laid out nearby in orderly rows, curving roads and planned sectors. The older market area is more irregular. The main railway line toward Bhusawal crosses the area and adds a strong straight line to the composition.
